Medi-Cal acupuncture coverage — what to know
Coverage Overview
Medi-Cal — California's Medicaid program — covers acupuncture for eligible members as a covered medical benefit. Since 2020, Medi-Cal has included acupuncture as a standard benefit across most managed care plans, recognizing it as an effective treatment for pain management and helping to reduce opioid dependency. Nature Acupuncture & Herbs accepts Medi-Cal at our Los Angeles locations.
Medi-Cal covers up to a specified number of acupuncture visits per year for medically necessary conditions. The covered provider must be a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.) enrolled in the Medi-Cal system. Coverage is available through most Medi-Cal managed care plans (Molina, etc.) and Fee-for-Service Medi-Cal. There is typically no copay for Medi-Cal members.

Medi-Cal Acupuncture Coverage FAQ
Does Medi-Cal cover acupuncture?
Yes. California expanded Medi-Cal benefits in 2020 to include acupuncture as a covered service for eligible members with medically necessary conditions. Coverage is provided through Medi-Cal managed care plans and Fee-for-Service Medi-Cal. You must see a licensed acupuncturist who is enrolled in the Medi-Cal system.
What Medi-Cal plans cover acupuncture?
Acupuncture coverage is available through most Medi-Cal managed care plans in Los Angeles County, including Molina Healthcare and others. Coverage may vary by plan, so we recommend calling the member services number on your Medi-Cal card to confirm your acupuncture benefit.
Do I need a referral from my doctor for Medi-Cal acupuncture?
Referral requirements vary by Medi-Cal managed care plan. Some plans allow direct access to acupuncturists; others require a referral or prior authorization. Our office can assist you in verifying your plan's requirements. If a referral is needed, your primary care physician can provide one for conditions like chronic back pain, migraines, or arthritis.
Is there a copay for acupuncture with Medi-Cal?
Most Medi-Cal members have no copay for covered acupuncture visits. Some managed care plans may have a nominal copay depending on your coverage level. We can verify your specific benefit, including any cost-sharing requirements, before your first appointment.
