Medi-Cal acupuncture coverage: no copay, 12 visits per year, and how to use your benefit

A lot of my patients on Medi-Cal are genuinely surprised to learn it covers acupuncture, because nobody ever told them, and they had assumed it was a treatment only people with good private insurance could afford. It is not. If you have Medi-Cal, you very likely have an acupuncture benefit sitting there, and I would rather you use it than keep paying cash or going without.

What Medi-Cal actually covers

California's Medi-Cal program includes acupuncture as a benefit for most members, and for the majority of people there is no copay. It is aimed at pain, which is where acupuncture does its best work anyway, so if you are dealing with chronic back, neck, or joint pain, headaches, or similar, you are squarely in what the benefit is designed for. The standard allowance is generally up to two acupuncture visits per calendar month, with the door open to more when a provider documents that additional treatment is medically necessary.

I want to be straight that the fine print can shift, because state benefits get adjusted over time, so rather than quote you a permanent-sounding number, I will tell you the honest version: the benefit is real, it is usually two visits a month at baseline, and we confirm your exact current coverage before you start.

Fee-for-service versus managed care

There is one wrinkle worth knowing. Some people have straight fee-for-service Medi-Cal, and many have it through a managed care plan, in Los Angeles County that usually means L.A. Care, Health Net, or Molina. The plan you have affects how visits are authorized and whether you need anything from your primary doctor first.
