UnitedHealthcare is one of the largest insurers I deal with, and the good news for members is that acupuncture is covered on a lot of UHC plans. The less convenient news, the same as with every carrier, is that the details depend heavily on your specific policy, and often on a managed network sitting behind it. Big insurer, many plans, a network in between

UnitedHealthcare is not one plan but a huge range of them, and many administer their acupuncture benefit through a managed physical-medicine network such as Optum or American Specialty Health. So your coverage might be solid, but the number of visits, the copay, the authorizations, and which providers are in-network are governed by your particular plan and that network's rules. This is why I never trust a blog that lists exact UHC acupuncture numbers as if they were universal; they cannot be.

What is broadly true

A few things hold across most UHC plans. Coverage is most dependable for pain, especially chronic pain, tracking the evidence. Many plans allow a defined number of visits per year, usually tied to a covered diagnosis. And UHC, like the rest of the industry, moved in a more favorable direction after Medicare began covering acupuncture for chronic low back pain in 2020.
