UnitedHealthcare acupuncture coverage — know your plan
Coverage Overview
UnitedHealthcare (UHC) covers acupuncture under most of its commercial plans, including employer-sponsored PPO, HMO, and Choice Plus plans. UHC has expanded its acupuncture benefits in recent years, particularly for chronic pain conditions, as part of its broader focus on reducing opioid use. Nature Acupuncture & Herbs is in-network with UnitedHealthcare.
UnitedHealthcare acupuncture benefits typically include 10–20 visits per year for covered conditions. Coverage applies when treatment is medically necessary and provided by a licensed acupuncturist enrolled in the UHC network. UHC PPO plans (such as Choice and Choice Plus) generally allow both in-network and out-of-network acupuncture. Visits are subject to your plan's deductible and specialist copay.

UnitedHealthcare Acupuncture Coverage FAQ
Does UnitedHealthcare cover acupuncture?
Yes. Most UnitedHealthcare commercial plans cover acupuncture as a medically necessary service. Covered conditions typically include chronic low back pain, headaches and migraines, nausea, and osteoarthritis. Coverage is provided through either the main medical benefit or a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) rider, depending on your plan.
How many acupuncture visits does UHC cover per year?
Most UnitedHealthcare plans cover between 10 and 20 acupuncture visits per year. Some plans include acupuncture under a combined CAM visit limit that also applies to chiropractic and massage therapy. We recommend confirming the visit limit and whether it is shared with other CAM services before booking.
Is acupuncture covered under a UHC employer plan?
Acupuncture coverage under employer-sponsored UHC plans depends on the benefits package your employer selected. Not all employer plans include an acupuncture benefit even if UHC offers it — it may be an optional add-on. Check your Summary of Benefits and Coverage document or call the member services number on your UHC card to confirm.
How do I find a UnitedHealthcare-covered acupuncturist?
You can search UHC's provider directory at myuhc.com, or call the member services number on the back of your card and ask for acupuncturists in your area. You can also contact our office directly — we'll verify whether your specific UHC plan covers our providers before your first appointment.
