Kaiser Permanente acupuncture coverage: visit limits, referrals, and costs

Kaiser Permanente is one of the most common insurers in Southern California, and Kaiser does cover acupuncture under most of its commercial plans. Nature Acupuncture & Herbs is in-network with Kaiser Permanente in California.

Kaiser's integrated model -- where the insurer and care delivery system are the same organization -- means the authorization process works differently than with other insurers. Here is what Kaiser acupuncture coverage looks like and how to confirm your specific benefits before booking.

Does Kaiser cover acupuncture?

Yes. Kaiser Permanente commercial plans include acupuncture as a covered benefit under most plan designs, including Kaiser's HMO, Silver, Gold, and Platinum tier plans. Kaiser has offered acupuncture coverage for years -- it was one of the earlier major insurers to integrate acupuncture into its standard benefit structure in California.

Kaiser Senior Advantage (Medicare Advantage) plans also cover acupuncture, primarily for chronic low back pain under the 2020 CMS mandate, with some plans voluntarily extending coverage to additional conditions.

How many visits does Kaiser cover per year?

Most Kaiser commercial plans allow up to 24 acupuncture visits per calendar year. Some plan designs set the limit lower -- typically 12 visits -- while employer-sponsored Kaiser plans sometimes negotiate higher visit counts. Your Evidence of Coverage document will state the specific limit for your plan.

Kaiser Medicare Advantage plans cover a minimum of 12 visits per year for chronic low back pain under the federal mandate, with up to 8 additional visits available with documented improvement.

Do I need a referral for acupuncture with Kaiser?

Because Kaiser operates as a managed care organization, a referral or authorization from your Kaiser primary care physician may be required before seeing an acupuncturist outside the Kaiser system. This process varies by plan and by the specific medical necessity documentation on file.

The clearest way to confirm what is required for your plan is to call Kaiser Member Services at the number on your ID card and ask whether your plan requires a referral to see an out-of-plan acupuncturist and whether Nature Acupuncture & Herbs is listed as an authorized provider in your network. Our billing team can also assist in confirming authorization requirements once we have your member ID.

What does Kaiser acupuncture cost?

With Kaiser, acupuncture visits are typically subject to a specialist copay, which runs $30 to $60 for most Kaiser commercial plans. HMO plans generally have fixed copays rather than coinsurance. After meeting your annual deductible (if one applies), you pay the copay per visit up to your visit limit for the year.

Out-of-pocket maximums apply across your Kaiser plan, which means that in a year with significant health spending, acupuncture costs may be partially or fully absorbed once you hit your plan's cap.

What conditions does Kaiser cover?

Kaiser's acupuncture benefit primarily targets musculoskeletal and pain-related conditions: low back pain, neck pain, headaches, joint pain, and post-surgical pain are consistently included. Some Kaiser plans extend coverage to chemotherapy-related nausea, pregnancy-related discomfort, and other conditions with documented medical necessity.

Cosmetic acupuncture is not covered under any Kaiser plan. Herbal medicine is a cash-pay service separate from the acupuncture benefit.

How to confirm your Kaiser acupuncture benefits

Call Kaiser Member Services at 1-800-464-4000 (or the number on your ID card) and ask: does my plan include an acupuncture benefit, how many visits per year, is a referral required, and is Nature Acupuncture & Herbs an authorized provider under my plan? Having your member ID and group number ready will speed up the call.
