Blue Shield of California is the second-largest insurer in the state, and acupuncture coverage under Blue Shield plans is generally more generous than the industry average. Most Blue Shield PPO plans allow 24 or more acupuncture visits per year, and some plans have no annual cap at all. If you have Blue Shield through an employer or through Covered California, checking your acupuncture benefit is worth doing.
We are in-network with Blue Shield of California at all three locations -- West LA, Hawthorne, and Lynwood. Here is what Blue Shield acupuncture coverage typically includes and what to ask when you call to verify.
What Blue Shield covers
Blue Shield of California covers acupuncture under most of its commercial plans as a standard benefit, not an add-on. Coverage applies to medically necessary acupuncture for conditions including chronic pain, headaches, nausea, and a range of other indications depending on your specific plan. Blue Shield has historically had one of the broader definitions of covered conditions for acupuncture among California insurers.
Plans purchased through Covered California (the state exchange) include acupuncture coverage under California law, which requires individual and small group plans to cover acupuncture. Large group employer plans have more variability, but most Blue Shield employer plans include the benefit.

Blue Shield PPO plans typically allow 24-30 acupuncture visits per calendar year for most commercial plans. Some plans allow additional visits with medical necessity documentation. HMO plans tend to have lower visit limits, often 12-20 per year.
Cost sharing works the same as for specialist visits -- you pay your deductible first if it has not been met, then a copay or coinsurance rate per visit. The contracted in-network rate we have with Blue Shield is significantly lower than out-of-network charges, so staying in-network matters financially. A typical in-network specialist copay on a Blue Shield PPO plan runs $30-60 per visit after your deductible.
Blue Shield individual plans through Covered California
California law requires individual and small-group health plans sold through Covered California to cover acupuncture. This applies to all metal tiers -- Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum -- though the cost-sharing structure differs. Platinum and Gold plans have lower deductibles and lower per-visit costs. Bronze plans have higher deductibles, meaning you may pay more out-of-pocket until you meet the deductible, but the coverage itself exists regardless of metal tier.
If you bought your Blue Shield plan through Covered California and are unsure whether it covers acupuncture, the answer is almost certainly yes -- it is required by state law for plans sold on the exchange.
How to confirm your Blue Shield benefits
Call the member services number on the back of your Blue Shield card and ask: does my plan cover acupuncture, how many visits per year, is Nature Acupuncture & Herbs in-network, what is my copay or coinsurance for specialist visits, and does my deductible apply to acupuncture. You can also log in to the Blue Shield member portal at blueshieldca.com to view your benefits summary, though phone confirmation is often more precise for network-specific questions.
Our billing team verifies Blue Shield benefits before your first appointment. Submit your information through the insurance form at natureac.com or call (424) 317-0014 and we will confirm your specific benefits within one business day. We see Blue Shield patients at all three LA locations.
What is not covered
Cosmetic acupuncture is not covered under any Blue Shield plan -- it is an elective aesthetic service. Herbal medicine and herbal supplements are cash-pay. Some employer-sponsored Blue Shield plans include acupuncture only for specific diagnoses, which is why verifying before your first visit is important rather than assuming full coverage.
