Aetna acupuncture coverage: what is included, visit limits, and how to verify

Aetna is one of the most widely used commercial insurers in Los Angeles, and most Aetna commercial plans include an acupuncture benefit. If you have Aetna through an employer, you likely have coverage -- but the specifics vary enough that it is worth checking your plan directly before booking.

We are in-network with Aetna, which means your costs are lower than seeing an out-of-network provider and there is no claims filing on your end. Here is what Aetna coverage for acupuncture typically looks like, and what to ask when you verify.

What Aetna covers

Aetna commercial plans generally cover acupuncture for musculoskeletal conditions and chronic pain. The 2020 CMS ruling -- which required Medicare Advantage plans to cover acupuncture for chronic low back pain -- accelerated the trend of commercial plans following suit. Most Aetna PPO, HMO, and Open Access plans now include acupuncture as a covered benefit under the same parameters as specialist visits.

Commonly covered conditions under Aetna include chronic low back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, headaches and migraines, and nausea. Some plans extend coverage to additional conditions including anxiety and insomnia, depending on the plan tier and employer benefit design.

Most Aetna commercial plans allow 15-20 acupuncture visits per calendar year, though some employer-negotiated plans allow more. Visits are typically subject to your annual deductible and a specialist copay or coinsurance rate -- the same cost-sharing structure as a visit to any other specialist.

If your deductible has already been met for the year, you generally pay only the copay. If your deductible has not been met, you pay the contracted rate until it is. The contracted rate -- what Aetna has negotiated with in-network providers like us -- is always lower than what an out-of-network provider charges.

How to verify your specific Aetna benefits

The fastest way to check is to call the member services number on the back of your Aetna insurance card and ask specifically: does my plan include an acupuncture benefit, how many visits per year, is Nature Acupuncture & Herbs in-network, what is my copay or coinsurance, and does my deductible apply. You can also check through Aetna's member portal at aetna.com, though phone confirmation tends to be more accurate for specific provider network status.

Our billing team verifies benefits before your first appointment as a standard part of intake. You can submit your insurance information through the verification form at natureac.com and we will confirm your specific acupuncture benefit, visit limit, and out-of-pocket cost within one business day.

Aetna Medicare Advantage and acupuncture

If you have an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan rather than commercial Aetna, acupuncture coverage is governed by the 2020 CMS mandate. Medicare Advantage plans are required to cover up to 12 acupuncture visits per year for chronic low back pain, with an additional 8 visits available if there is documented improvement. Coverage is for acupuncture only -- electroacupuncture and dry needling are not covered under this benefit.

Medicare Advantage coverage does not extend to conditions beyond chronic low back pain under the federal mandate, though some Aetna Medicare Advantage plans have voluntarily expanded coverage. Your specific plan documents will say what is included.

What is not covered

Cosmetic acupuncture is not covered under any Aetna plan. Herbal medicine and herbal supplements are also not covered -- these are cash-pay services if you choose to add them. Some plans exclude acupuncture entirely if the employer opted out of including it in their benefit package, which is why verifying before your first visit matters.
